The 99th Koala by Kailas Wild

$32.99 AUD

Available Stock:
3

Category: Land (climbers/burrowers incl) Animals

In last summer's devastating fires, Kangaroo Island lost half of its koala population, with many more left injured and starving. This is the inspiring and sometimes confronting story of someone who went to help and ended up a koala dad.   When Kailas Wild - arborist by trade and conservationist at heart - heard that there were injured koalas on Kangaroo Island who could only be reached by a tree climber, he drove 1500 kms to volunteer.   Seven weeks later, he had crowd-funded sixty-five thousand dollars, participated in the rescue of over 100 koalas and had formed a special bond with a baby koala - Joey Kai. His social media postings gained tens of thousands of views and press attention around Australia and overseas, including the BBC, The Times (London), The New York Times and The Daily Mail.   The 99th Koala shares that experience, in words and pictures, and introduces us to some of the koalas of Kangaroo Island. Sometimes tragic, sometimes hopeful, Kai's story above all commemorates our unique wildlife, and demonstrates the power of one person trying to make a difference.   'At a time when many people have felt helpless to act against the immensity of the fires or the threat of climate change, Kai's daily descriptions and videos of saving helpless animals have been a welcome dose of personal courage and deep humanity.' In the ensuing years he has taken part in scientific surveys of a wide range of environments- from the deep waters off the North West Shelf to the inshore waters of the southern coast of Australia and the coral reefs of Papua New Guinea. As expedition artist with a team of international scientists, he spent two months surveying the fish life of the remote Clipperton Atoll in the far eastern Pacific. Later he worked with the Natural History Museum of Paris and Pro-Natura International, portraying the biodiversity of the marine environments and freshwater streams of Vanuatu. More recently he has accompanied scientists surveying the biodiversity of northern Mozambique and Madagascar.Swainston has dived, snorkelled and painted fishes right around the coast of Australia and in many other locations worldwide, including the Mediterranean, Red Sea, Caribbean, and areas throughout the Indian and Pacific oceans. For many years he has closely monitored a number of sites on Ningaloo Reef, off Western Australia, spending countless hours under water drawing the reefs and observing and photographing fishes to produce panoramic scenes of the environments. He has also worked extensively with professional fishers around Australia, studying their catches and fishing methods. His work has been included in many well known field guides to fishes, including Sea Fishes of Southern Australia, Marine Fishes of North western Australia, Reef Fishes of New Guinea, Freshwater Fishes of New Guinea and Fishes of the Eastern Pacific. Bird Way by Jennifer Ackerman

$35.00 AUD

Available Stock:
2

Category: Birds

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Genius of Birds, a radical investigation into the bird way of being, and the recent scientific research that is dramatically shifting our understanding of birds -- how they live and how they think. 'There is the mammal way and there is the bird way.' Thi s is one scientist's pithy distinction between mammal brains and bird brains: two ways to make a highly intelligent mind. But the bird way is much more than a unique pattern of brain wiring, and lately, scientists have taken a new look at bird behaviours they have, for years, dismissed as anomalies or mysteries. What they are finding is upending the traditional view of how birds conduct their lives, how they communicate, forage, court, breed, survive. They're also revealing the remarkable intelligence underlying these activities, abilities we once considered uniquely our own -- deception, manipulation, cheating, kidnapping, infanticide, but also, ingenious communication between species, cooperation, collaboration, altruism, culture, and play. Some of these extraordinary behaviours are biological conundrums that seem to push the edges of-well-birdness: A mother bird that kills her own infant sons, and another that selflessly tends to the young of other birds as if they were her own. Young birds that devote themselves to feeding their siblings and others so competitive they'll stab their nestmates to death. Birds that give gifts and birds that steal, birds that dance or drum, that paint their creations or paint themselves, birds that build walls of sound to keep out intruders and birds that summon playmates with a special call -- and may hold the secret to our own penchant for playfulness and the evolution of laughter. Drawing on personal observations, the latest science, and her bird-related travel around the world, from the tropical rainforests of eastern Australia and the remote woodlands of northern Japan, to the rolling hills of lower Austria and the islands of Alaska's Kachemak Bay, Ackerman shows there is clearly no single bird way of being. In every respect, in plumage, form, song, flight, lifestyle, niche, and behaviour, birds vary. It's what we love about them. As E.O Wilson once said, when you have seen one bird, you have not seen them all. ...Show more

Bird Bonds by Gisela Kaplan

$34.99 AUD

Available Stock:

Category: Birds

Australian birds have a very special place in the evolution of modern birds. They are known to live unusually long lives, form long-lasting bonds and are overall exceptionally intelligent. The question is why this may be so. In this highly compelling new book, Professor Gisela Kaplan explores the evolut ion of particular cognitive and social abilities that make the emotional and sex lives of birds work to their advantage. How Australian birds actually choose mates makes fascinating reading as the author uncovers motivations and attractions in partner choice that are far more complex than was once believed. She also shows how humans and birds may be more alike in attachment and mating behaviour than we think - despite the enormous evolutionary distance between us. For birdwatchers, researchers and nature lovers alike, and based on a wealth of original and cited research, Bird Bonds is a valuable resource and a beguiling insight into the world of the birds around us. ...Show more
